Foreign Affairs - Chapter 5

Chapter – 5 After we loaded Mia’s luggage in the car, we left for the hotel, where she was to stay. “I hope you are comfortable, ma’am?” I asked her, as I got into the seat next to the driver. Mia was seated at the back. “Please don’t call me ma’am. Call me Mia,” she said. “Okay maam. Sorry, Mia,” I said. She just smiled and asked, “So, Sachin you are working with Systech?” “Of course, I am one of the back-end developer. I had been working in this project with your bank from day one. In fact, I had been in touch with you through mails,” I said. “Oh, is it?” she said with furrowed eyebrows, as if she was in some deep thought and then said after a pause, “But I don’t remember seeing any of your mails.” “Oh, that’s because my full name is Sachidhanandha Swaminathan,” I said with sheepishly “Oh! Okay. You are SS?” she said with a laugh. “SS?” “That’s how we used to call you at our office,” she said, “it was too hard to even attempt to read your name.” “Oh,” I ...

Chapter – 4   Having an empty room in my home, made my heart heavy and my wallet light. Yes, I felt so bored and lonely and I missed Arura a lot. Also paying rent for a 2BHK apartment located in the heart of the city, was causing a hole in my pocket. “You must get a new roommate or shift to a smaller flat with lesser rent,” Arura said. We were on our routine video call. It had already been a month since she had left and we tried to stay in touch through Skype. “Ah! I like this flat a lot. I don’t think I will be comfortable anywhere else,” I said. “Ok, then try to find a roommate,” she said. “As if I have not tried. Just after you left, there were many guys and even few girls who were interested to take your room,” I said. “That’s great. Pick one of them.” “I did not want to go for any girl roommate. I don’t think I would be comfortable with any other girl. With you, it just felt like being with a guy,” I said. “Should I take this as a compliment or wha...

Foreign Affairs - Chapter 3

Chapter -3 Having a girl as a roommate was not all glam and fancy as it is thought to be. Indeed, it was a lot more awkward and uncomfortable than having a roommate of the same sex as yours. I was very conscious about the way I behaved, talked, dressed or even existed inside the house when she was around. Also, I was a bit apprehensive, after my con-call with my friends Kapil and Mahender, who had warned that staying with a girl might not be a good idea as it is easy to get romantic feelings for the other. I was not worried that I would fall in love. Because, falling in love was never an option for me. From my early days it has been clearly instilled in my mind by my parents that a love marriage is never acceptable in our family. I have been told many stories about the repercussions of a love marriage and how it is embarrassing for the parents to face the society when their kids make their own choice to marry someone. I had been conditioned to such an extent where I had who...
